Tinnitus

Evaluation

A tinnitus evaluation is a comprehensive assessment designed to understand and address your tinnitus symptoms. During the evaluation, an audiologist will conduct a thorough hearing test to assess your auditory function and identify any underlying issues. You’ll also discuss your medical history and the specifics of your tinnitus, including its pitch, loudness, and any factors that may worsen it. Additional tests may be performed to determine how tinnitus affects your quality of life.

Treatment

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)is based on the neurophysiological model of tinnitus and focuses on removing the responses evoked by tinnitus and to stop reactions to unwanted sounds. TRT uses a structured approach designed to help individuals manage their tinnitus symptoms more effectively. It combines two main components: sound therapy and counseling.

TRT is typically a long-term process, often taking several months to see significant improvements. The idea is to retrain the brain to habituate to the tinnitus sound, reducing its impact on daily life and improving overall quality of life. It’s essential to work with a qualified professional to ensure the therapy is tailored to individual needs.

Decreased Sound Tolerance

Some individuals may experience decreased sound tolerance (hyperacusis and misophonia).  People with hyperacusis react negatively to sounds that most people do not find bothersome.  Individuals with misophonia react negatively to specific sounds or sounds in specific situations or locations.
